What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is one of the most popular and widely played casino card games in the world. In this game, your objective is to beat the dealer’s hand by getting 21 sharp or a hand value close to 21. If you go over that range, then you will lose the hand. You can hit, stand, or surrender during a blackjack round.

It is a very simple game with fast-paced and super entertaining gameplay. There are several variations of this game, but the basic rules remain the same in all of them. They diversify the card decks used and include some additional betting options.

Blackjack Origins

The origins of blackjack are debatable as there are a couple of beliefs. Firstly, many believe that it’s a version of the French variant of twenty-one, also known as Vingt-Un.

Its origins are unknown, but it is most likely to be from Spain. Miguel de Cervantes is the first one to write it in a book (Rinconete y Cortadillo). He wrote this book in 1601 and 1602 and in it, he mentions that the object is to reach 21. Miguel also notes that the Ace has a value of 1 or 11.

The first records of blackjack in France date back to 1888, while in the UK from 1770s to 1780s. However, it is worth mentioning that the first rules of the game in Britain are from 1800. The name of the game at the time was Vingt-Un.

In the USA, the first rules of the game came in 1825, as a reprint from the 1800 UK rules. The British version of the game was later developed as an American version. People started using blackjack as the new name around 1899.

There is a myth about blackjack being introduced into the US, where the time frame isn’t very specific. Some believe that it comes from the early 1800s, while others think it dates from the First World War or the 1930s.

Either way, this myth indicates that gambling houses were offering bonus payouts as a way to attract players. One of the bonuses was a 10/1 payout if you got a hand of the Ace of Spades and one of the Black Jacks. Thanks to this hand, the name blackjack stuck to this day.
