What is a bet?
A stake, in the context of a casino, refers to the amount of money you bet on a game of chance. When you play games such as slots, blackjack, roulette, poker, etc., you place a bet before the game starts.

Roulette inside bets
In roulette, inside bets are located in the inside area of the roulette betting table. Inside bets are placed on individual numbers or on specific combinations of numbers. Here are the types of bets you can find:
- Full number: Place a chip on a number (from 0 to 36 on European roulette). This is the riskiest bet as there is the least chance of winning.
- Horse: A horse bet is a single chip placed on the line between two numbers that are close to each other on the betting table.
- Transversal: A chip is placed on the line between the 1 (or 4, 7, 10 and so on) and the area of the adjacent dozen will cover the 3 numbers in that row.
- Square: To cover 4 numbers in a square on the betting board, place a chip in the intersecting vertical and horizontal lines.
- First Five: This 5-number bet is found only in American Roulette. By placing a chip on the corner of the 0, 1 and 1st 12, you can cover 0-00-1-2-3.
- Sixain: With this bet, you can cover a block of 6 numbers such as 1 to 6 or 4 to 9 by placing a chip at the end of the group where the dozens of bets are located, between two crosses.
Roulette outside bets
As you may have guessed, while inside bets are placed on the inside of the betting table, outside bets are placed on the outside of the table. They generally offer a higher probability of winning than inside bets, but on the other hand, the potential winnings are generally lower. Below are the outside bets:
- Column: Column bets are placed at the end of each row and cover 12 numbers, including all three numbers on the wheel. For example, a top column bet includes 3-6-9-12-15-18-21-24-27-30-33-36.
- Dozen: To place a dozen bet, look for the 3 sections usually labelled 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. This allows you to bet on 12 numbers without them being in a column.
- Miss-pass: Placing a Miss bet means you’re betting that the ball will come to rest on a number between 1 and 18, while a Pass bet means you’re betting on a number between 19 and 36.
- Even-Odd: An Even bet means you are betting on an even number, while an Odd bet means you are betting on an odd number.
- Red-Black: By placing a bet on Red, you are betting that the ball will stop on a red number, and with a bet on Black, you are betting on a black number.
Roulette announcement bets
Once you’re more comfortable with the main types of bet, you may want to try some more unusual ones. Here is a short list of them:
- The Tier of the Cylinder: This bet covers about a third of the cylinder, from 33 to 27.
- Zero Neighbours: This is a bet on the numbers surrounding the zero on the roulette wheel. This includes the zero itself, as well as the adjacent numbers to the left and right.
- Orphan: This is a bet on the numbers not included in the previous bets, covering the remaining numbers on the wheel.
- The Neighbourhood: This involves betting on a specific number and the two adjacent numbers on either side of it on the cylinder.
