History and Facts about the Mayans
The Mayans, or Maya civilisation, are a group of indigenous people who come from Central America and inhabit the countries there.
They usually live in southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras and there are an estimated six million Maya living in those countries in the 21st century.
Going back thousands of years, the Classic Maya civilisation collapsed in the 8th and 9th centuries.
Although this was termed as a collapse, the Maya civilisation didn’t end here but a shift away from the south to the north occurred. The artistic and cultural elements of the Maya architecture changed over this period.
In the period after the collapse (the Post-Classic Period) Chichen Itza built an empire that briefly united the Maya people and Maya centres flourished after the collapse.
Independent Maya civilisation prospered until 1697 when the Spanish conquered Nojpeten, the last city state of the Maya.
Today, many Maya can be found to live in the Yucatan State with Spanish the common language for these people.
Here are some interesting facts about the Mayans you may not have known:-
- Mayans never used steel or iron. Instead they used volcanic rock known as obsidian.
- Mayans were literate people and they came up with their own writing system. It was observed as one of the most complex writing systems on the planet and the Mayans wrote on whatever they could.
- Mayans made use of three different calendars. One of these was more like the modern Gregorian calendar which weas 365 days long. Another they used was called the Long Count calendar, which was reset in 2012, leading to the prophecy of the destruction of the world in that year.
- Mayans were ahead of their time when it came to anything to do with the medical world. They could fill teeth and use human hair to stem blood from wounds.
- Mesoamerican Ballgame was one of the favourite pastimes of the Mayan people. Courts were found in all major cities. However, the losing team were normally decapitated (blimey!).
How to play
Mayan Gods is designed beautifully, with some golden alien-looking structure behind the reels which shimmers amongst the jungle florae.
The reels matrix are made up of blocks which drop out of view on each spin. New blocks fall into place and you win a prize when three or more matching symbols are then seen across any of the 20 paylines from left to right.
Those winning symbols will then disappear, perhaps beamed away by the Gods. It leaves empty spaces for new symbols to drop in to and with a little luck this new combination will see winning lines created. These will then disappear into thin air again, but the win will now be doubled in value. This keeps going on, with each consecutive win raising a multiplier by 1x, until no new winning combinations are landed.
While most symbols will need to be on at least reels one, two, and three to be worth anything, this box pays out for just two on a line, with 500x the line stake awarded when it crosses all five reels.
The black and gold jaguar is worth up to 500x the line stake as well, but is also a wild symbol that substitutes for others if it can then complete combinations of symbols.
Mayan Gods Special Features
Other golden idols have special powers as well. The Mayan Shaman will appear at random, awarding a win multiplier and then getting rid of all other symbols on the reels for a Free Respin. If the golden UFO appears, it flies around the reels destroying all the little symbols which will then be replaced by high-paying ones.
The Mayan Eclipse sees two gold discs in a 2×2 block which magically change themselves, plus other random blocks, into multiple examples of the same symbol type. The Mayan King, his eyes glistening with red jewels, is a 2×2-sized wild symbol who not only acts as others but can also add even more jaguar wilds to the reels to give you some great rewards.
