Where does blackjack come from?

No one really knows exactly where blackjack came from, but it is said that its history dates back to the 17th century.

The game is thought to have its roots in 18th-century French card games such as Vingt-et-un, which was very popular among the French nobility and royal court.

Another theory is that the game actually originated in Spain, in a game called “One and Thirty”, the aim of which was to reach 31 with three cards.

Whatever its origin, blackjack spread to North America in the mid-nineteenth century. The game evolved with the times, becoming the blackjack we know today. It is one of the most popular card games in casinos around the world.

The rules of blackjack

The objective of blackjack is simple: to obtain a hand whose total value is as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it, and higher than the dealer’s hand.

Cards numbered 2 to 10 retain their face value. Kings, queens and jacks are all worth 10 points. As for the ace, it can be worth 1 or 11, whichever is more advantageous for the player.

Each player receives two initial cards, face up, and the dealer receives one face up and one face down. You can then ask for an additional card (Draw) to try to improve your hand, or stay with your hand (Stand).

If you receive two initial cards of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands, each with an additional bet.

Generally, the dealer must draw until at least 17 points are reached. Once you have made your decision, the dealer then reveals his card. If your hand, or the dealer’s hand, exceeds 21, you lose. If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s, you win, and vice versa. Finally, if you get 21, it’s blackjack!

What are the standard blackjack bets?

Blackjack bets depend largely on the game you choose. You have an initial bet, placed before the cards are dealt. Insurance, which usually costs half your initial bet, protects you if the dealer’s first card is an ace.

Double Down allows you to double your bet after receiving your first two cards.

As mentioned above, splitting your cards can be an option. Each card will then have its own bet equal to the initial bet.
